STEP FORWARD
“Step Forward,” is a capsule collection that subverts historical and traditional notions of women’s wear through a contemporary lens. The commercial, ready for wear garments portray feminine power through their silhouettes and colour.
A palette incorporating greens, purples, and shades of white was inspired by the women’s suffragette movement, who wore these hues on prominent sashes to communicate their political leanings. The sash has become an abstract signifier in this collection, with asymmetric lines and implications. Satin ribbons have been incorporated to further the reading of the sash, as well as a signifier of femininity.
Fabric and pattern manipulations were incorporated to add volume and create loose silhouettes that draw inspiration from women’s dresses during World War II; a time of innovation and change for women. In this context, volume illustrates freedom, literally and conceptually.
When one wears this collection, may they embody a strong and confident woman, acknowledging their contribution of past women who fought for their freedom and respect.
The Australian Wool Education Trust provided financial sponsorship for wool fabrics sourced in this collection.
