Gypsy Voyage
Gypsy culture has often been a focus of cultural appropriation in the fashion industry.
By addressing inter-cultural appreciation within this collection, the history of Gypsy culture is explored for its interrelation of different ethnic groups coexisting in a multicultural environment and its historical evolution.
Designed as conceptual fashion, this collection is inspired by the evolution and migration of nomadic Gypsies that originated in Punjab, North India, and Rajasthan to Europe between the eighth and tenth centuries. Each outfit addresses different traditions inherited throughout their journey while expressing diversity, creativity, and survival through handmade textiles.
The collection employs crocheting and an array of sustainable materials such as recycled sari ribbon, wool yarn, jewellery, patterns and an eclectic colour to channel the interlocking of diversity, whilst simultaneously highlighting differences in individuality. This collection is a celebration of cultural fusion in modern society through unity, peace, and happiness.
The Australian Wool Education Trust provided financial sponsorship for wool fabrics sourced in this collection.
